Pond Keepers is a week-long program that combines environmental science and creativity. It is run by Peconic Community School in partnership with the Citizen Science Learning Center and The Artist's Nest. Kids explore local aquatic ecosystems around the North Fork.
Participants visit Laurel Lake, Marratooka Lake, Peconic Bay, and Long Island Sound beaches. At each site, they test water quality, use seine nets to sample organisms, and collect data.
A scientist and an artist lead the program. Bob Mozer from the Citizen Science Learning Center shares his expertise in geology and environmental education. Tonito Valderrama from The Artist's Nest adds art and conservation teaching.
Kids sketch, photograph, and journal their discoveries. They also learn to make maps using GIS. This half-day camp is designed for older kids interested in science, water, and hands-on fieldwork.
The meeting location changes daily. Transportation to and from Peconic Community School is available for an extra fee, space permitting.
The program runs Monday through Friday, July 27-31, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Tuition is $450 for the week.
