Dorothy P. Flint 4-H Camp in Riverhead is one of the oldest 4-H camps in New York State, founded in 1924. The 140-acre property by the Long Island Sound includes a working farm, a waterfront for swimming and kayaking, ropes courses with a zipline, an archery range, a nature center, sports fields, and an indoor horseback riding arena. The camp is operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension and accredited by the American Camp Association.
Each day, campers rotate through classes from a menu that changes each week. On the farm, they feed and groom animals. In past summers, these have included pigs, goats, sheep, horses, rabbits, and guinea hens. A Farm-to-Table program is offered on select weeks. In archery, campers play games like Tic-Tac-Toe and Shoot Your Fears. Outdoor living classes teach shelter building, fire starting, and how to use a map and compass. Nature and ecology classes explore local ecosystems through hikes and hands-on experiments. Visual arts projects include jewelry making, basket weaving, comic book creation, and DIY fashion, with standout pieces entered in the Long Island Fair. Sports include soccer, lacrosse, rugby, ultimate frisbee, and more.
Each week has a different theme, such as Superhero Week, Color War, Spirit Week, and Carnival Week. Themed evening programs and campfires end each day. Teens ages 14 to 16 can join the Leadership in Training program along with regular camp activities. Campers who are not ready for a full week can sign up for a Mini-Stay, which lasts three days instead of six.
Sessions run Monday through Saturday, June 29 through August 22. Drop-off is Monday at 9:00 am, and pick-up is Saturday at 9:00 am. Tuition is $840 per week. Mini-Stay sessions, which run Monday to Wednesday or Thursday to Saturday, cost $420. Stayover weekends between back-to-back sessions are $250. All meals and snacks are included. Financial aid is available.
